Well most of us have heard the term, maybe even had them serviced. Perhaps your car wheel bearings have failed in the past. But what are they and what do they do? Is anything required? Good questions. Recently I was asked this, and to explain we have to go back, before front wheel drive became the normal thing for almost all vehicles. We had wheel bearings. Wheel bearings 2 per wheel (front) and a grease seal required periodic removal, cleaning & inspection. If all was good, then a repacking by hand, along with a new seal was done about every 15,000 miles. Rear wheel bearings were constantly lubed by the axle oil in the differential. ASE Certified Master technicians can help with your Wheel Bearing Services in Scaggsville, Fulton, Highland, Burtonsville, Clarksville North Laurel MD.
With the introduction of front wheel drive and more compact vehicles a change was made to a bearing & hub assembly. This new design is a permanently lubed & sealed unit. So no periodic servicing is required. But, they can fail in several ways. One way wheel bearing fail is noise. Another is they can develop play. The last is the failure of the ABS(Anti Lock Brake system) inside them. You can learn more about our Brakes repair services.
Noise & play require replacement. The ABS sensor is replacable, if not rusted in place.
Rust & heat are the most common cause of failures for Bearing & Hub style wheel bearings.
So what to do? Pay attention to how your vehicle drives and sounds. Easy enough, drive without the radio on and no one else in the vehicle. When you can listen and pay attention to the feel & sounds. Then go back and listen to what ever you like. Depending on how much you drive, every month or two do this. If you notice a change - see your mechanic. Tell him/her of the change & they will know what to address. Be aware of the roads that you travel on. Some roads & bridges have unique surfaces that generate noise. This would be normal, so it's important to know your vehicle, your travel area and what sounds are okay.
What was the primary reason you gave this service facility this 5 out of 5 Star score?
They were very nice on the phone when I made the appointment, the facility was very clean. Service was prompt and was completed as promised.
